Running Water Bottles

CamelBak Running Water Bottles

Carrying water while running is one of the most consistent factors in performance and recovery - hydration affects pace, endurance and how you feel in the hours after a run. CamelBak running water bottles are designed to be carried in motion: lightweight, easy to drink from without breaking stride, and available in handheld and soft flask formats for road running, trail running and race day.

Can you run with a water bottle?

Yes. Running with a water bottle is standard practice for any run over 45-60 minutes, or shorter runs in heat. The key is the format: a standard rigid bottle is impractical to carry while running because it requires you to grip it continuously and affects arm swing. Running-specific formats solve this - handheld bottles have an integrated strap that holds the bottle against your palm so your hand stays relaxed, and soft flasks compress as you drink so they fit in a vest pocket without bouncing.

How to carry water while running

There are three practical ways to carry water running, each suited to a different type of run. A handheld running bottle straps to your palm and is the simplest option for road runs and shorter trail runs - no vest required, immediate access. A soft flask is designed to sit in the front pocket of a running vest or hydration pack, compressing as it empties so it never feels bulky - the choice for longer trail runs and ultras. For runs where you want hands completely free and more volume than a handheld, running hydration packs combine a reservoir with storage for kit, nutrition and layers.

Should you run with a water bottle?

For runs under 30-40 minutes in mild conditions, most runners do not need to carry water - you can hydrate before and after. For anything longer, in heat, or on trail where water sources are scarce, carrying water becomes important. A practical starting point: if you would stop at a fountain during the run, carry a bottle instead. The weight of a running-specific bottle (as low as 50g empty for a soft flask) is negligible compared to the performance and recovery benefit of consistent hydration.

Handheld running bottles vs soft flasks

Handheld running bottles are rigid, insulated or standard, and held in place by a palm strap - they offer immediate access and work without a vest. Soft flasks are flexible, ultra-lightweight (some under 50g) and designed to live in a vest pocket or waistbelt - they compress as they empty, eliminating the sloshing and bouncing of a rigid bottle. If you run without a vest and want the simplest possible setup, a handheld is the right choice. If you already run with a hydration vest or are moving towards one, soft flasks integrate directly into it.

How to clean running water bottles

Rinse with warm soapy water after every run. Use a bottle brush to reach the base of rigid bottles and a thin brush or pipe cleaner for the nozzle. For soft flasks, turn inside out if possible and rinse thoroughly - trapped moisture is the main cause of odour. Leave both types to air dry completely with the cap off before storing. For a deeper clean, CamelBak cleaning tablets remove residue and odour from both rigid bottles and soft flasks. Do not leave water sitting in any running bottle between sessions.
